    Comparing Decimals

Related Topics: Comparing Whole Numbers, Place values of decimals
    1. Compare Whole Numbers the higher the whole number the greater the number.
    2. Compare digits of the decimal part from left to right.
    3. Note: Zeros at the right of the last nonzero digit after the decimal point do not affect the value of the decimal.
    Example:
    • 1. Which is greater between 12.65 and 12.56
      • Since the whole numbers are the same 12 = 12. Compare the decimal part from left to right.
      • Since 6 > 5, it shows that 12.65 > 12.56
    • 2. Arrange the decimal in ascending order. 4.900, 4.180, 4.159
      • The whole numbers are all the same thus we just compare the decimal part.
      • Since 9 > 1 , the highest is 4.900. The other two numbers were 1 thus we compare the next digits which are 8 and 5 (8 > 5), so it follows that 4.180 > 4.159.
      • To arrange: 4.159, 4.180 and 4.900
    • 3. Write the largest decimal number less than 1 having five different digits and 0 in the hundredths place.
      • To write this number we need to start with the highest digit followed by zero then the next largest digit downwards.
      • Thus the answer is : 0.90876
    • 4. Kid spends 2.5 hours a day watching videos while his brother Old spends 30 minutes a day watching videos. If they both do this in a week then who spends more time watching videos, and by how much is the difference?
      • Kid spends 2.5 hrous a day, thus in one week 2.5 x 7 = 15 hours
      • Old spends 30 minutes = 0.5 hours a day, thus in one week 0.5 x 7 = 3.5 hours
      • The difference 15 -3.5 = 11.5 hours
      • Answer: In a week Kid spends more time watching videos and he uses 11.5 hours more, compared to his brother.
