Find the larger root of $$10x^2 -x = 3$$

Solution

• $$10x^2 -x-3 = 0$$

• a = 10: b = -1: c = -3

• $$x_1 = \frac{--1+\sqrt{1^2-4(10)(-3)}}{2(10)} = \frac{3}{5}$$

• $$x_1 = \frac{--1-\sqrt{1^2-4(10)(-3)}}{2(10)} = \frac{-1}{2}$$

• Thus the larger root is $$\frac{3}{5}$$
